ANAKENA, is the name of the main beach on Easter Island, with white and fine coral sand, crystalline turquoise sea, calm waves and coconut palms make it an ideal place for rest and leisure. This beach is considered the cradle of island history and culture for Easter Island. The Legend on the island, passed down through many generations,  was that on this beach the first king of the island, the Ariki Hotu Matu’a, a Polynesian chief arrived with  two large canoes and founded the first settlement on Rapa Nui. Modern archaeology has found traces of human settlement at Anakena Beach as early as 1,200 BC. Thousands of sailors have come here over time, in all sorts of boats, dropped anchor and reveled in the delights of this beach. As a boat name, the pronunciation is simple in any language, easy to spell over the radio, and also qualifies as a feminine name for a boat.

ANAKENA: Specifications & History

History: between 1999 to 2006 over 400 Hanse 371s were built, this yacht is hull number 94 and was manufactured in 2002. Latter models are the Hanse 370 and Hanse 375 each of similar design.

Hanse 371 yachts have sailed all over the world, in Club racing, coastal and open ocean cruising, two have circumnavigated the world, and many others in the ARC Rallies crossing the Atlantic. The fastest speed attained has been 18 knots, reaching downwind on flat water … still an incredible speed for a 8 ton yacht.

The 371 yacht was designed by Judel/Vroljik (an Americas Cup designer) and were built at the HANSE factory in EAST GERMANY. The hull is with sandwich construction with chopped strands and balsa core coming down to the waterline with solid fiberglass below and additional reinforcement around the keel. The hull to deck joint was bonded with adhesive and topped with a through bolted aluminum toerail. It is a solid boat. There are 11 bolts holding on the keel. The diesel moto is a 30 hp Volvo Penta Saildrive which gives a good seep of 5-6 knots at 2,500 revs. Consuming 2lt of fuel per hour.

This is boat No. 94, it was shipped to Melbourne, it was one of the first HANSE in Australia and appeared in the Melbourne Boat Show. It started sailing in 2003 at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, Port Philip Bay, Melbourne, it was then called “Hands Off” and was sailed by Grant St Quentin (Club Commodore), in 2006 he won the A Division for cursing yachts, they also sailed in a Category 1 race across Bass Straight.  In 2008, the boat was purchased by Don Parker in Sydney, he sailed the boat with the Port Hacking Yacht Club, south of Sydney, winning many Wednesday afternoon races. In 2014 the boat sailed up and back to the Whitsunday Islands, north Queensland, before this trip new running rigging installed with a higher gauge wire, and a new No.1 and No.3 headsails were purchased.

Since purchase in 2015, the boat was re-named “Anakena”, the rudder was removed and a new aluminum rudderpost and frame was installed, the engine was completely overhauled and the electronic equipment upgraded. A new mainsail was purchased to replace the original sail, and a Genneker and snuffer purchased.
